The history of the University dates back to 19th century. Since its inception as a Veterinary School in 1882, this seat of learning has successfully completed its several phases. The School was upgraded to Punjab Veterinary College (1905), affiliated with the University of the Punjab (1942) and University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (1971). Realizing the importance of Livestock Sector in Pakistan, the College of Veterinary Sciences was upgraded to the level of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore (2002) so that human resource may be developed to cater the growing need of this rising Sector. At present the University has five Faculties viz. Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Animal Production & Technology, Faculty of Bio-Sciences, Faculty of Livestock Business Management and Faculty of Fisheries & Wildlife. Additionally, University has Directorate of Continuing Education and Extension and Directorate of Advanced Studies. All five Faculties have 18 Departments which are offering DVM degree, BSc (Hons) degrees in the disciplines of Fisheries & Aquaculture, Poultry Sciences, Microbiology, Bio-informatics and MBA (Life Sciences). Out of these, 11 Departments are also offering MPhil degrees while 8 Departments are offering PhD degrees.

The impact of a university in a society is not measured by teaching but also by the research activities which plays a pivotal role for the progress of a country. Effectiveness of a research, however, is not achieved until its findings are widely disseminated across the globe through publication in the journals so that the validity of the same may be tested by other scientists.

It was the dire need of the University to initiate its own scientific journal. This journal has been named as “Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences and it will cover all related areas. Manuscript can be submitted, reviewed and processed through this website. The Journal will be online and the peer reviewed. Our vision is to get JVAS, through its quality quickly be recognized by HEC, Islamabad and internationally with an impact factor rating.
